CX Short takes: Day 3

Monday, 06 Apr 2009 18:39

Christoph Nienaber, Rostock School of Medicine University Hospital, Germany

"I’m looking forward to the debate on uncomplicated aortic dissection [Michael Dake and Peter Taylor, Monday afternoon]. I’ll be on the preventative side. I think Peter is a better debater. He has a good sense of humour. So probably Peter will win.

But I think there’s a good reason for preventative stent graft placement in order to prevent aneurysm formation. The problem is, the procedure is not risk free. Otherwise, there not be any resistance.

"I’m also looking forward to the branched endografts debate [Robert Bosner and Krassi Ivancev, also Monday afternoon]. At the presented time there is a lot of indication that there is no future for branche endografts, because it makes the procedure too complex. And open surgery techniques are improving.

"I particularly like the debates at the CX Symposium, and I like the controversial standpoints."

Michael Dake, Stanford University Medical Centre, California

"Well, most of my interest now is around the legs, peripheral arteries and also the aorta. On Sunday, I heard some very interesting controversies around the follow-up after EVAR, related to who needs to be followed up, how they should be followed up and how long they should be followed up. I think that’s really important because it helps us treat our patients better.

"I’ll be attending the sessions on the thoracic aorta, which is a real focus of interest for me and I’m also looking forward to hearing a talk on venous disease and multiple sclerosis, that’s an area that is certainly new. We’re only just beginning to try and understand that relationship."

"Oh yes, this year’s symposium is living up to the theme of controversies! I always look forward to Charing Cross because it forces people to think about issues in a way that’s different from maybe, what they’re used to. As opposed to the presentations, which are strictly didactic, the debates certainly add a bit of spice to the proceedings, and get you emotionally engaged with the controversies that are featured.
