Report about EAVST
The European Association of Vascular Surgeons in Training (EAVST) was founded in 1994 in Berlin, during the annual ESVS Meeting It is an organisation that aims to collect information on training and education of European vascular surgeons, and in cooperation with national or international vascular surgical organisations to perform surveys or research in relation to the training of vascular surgeons. EAVST also aims to promote intra-European exchange programmes for vascular trainees, as well as the formation of National Associations of Vascular Surgeons in Training. Currently, we are working on the Trainee Registration Form (presented at the UEMS meeting in Innsbruck) and Training Centers Evaluation Form. These forms reflect vascular trainee activity in Europe. The aim of this exercise is to objectively assess vascular training from the trainees' perspective, pinpoint specific problems, and help in harmonizing training in vascular surgery across Europe.
The EAVST was, from the very beginning, well received both by the UEMS Division for Vascular Surgery, a year later by the newly formed European Board for Vascular Surgery (EBVS) and the ESVS Council. Currently, the EAVST Secretary represents all 435 ESVS Junior members at the Council. Each year, at the annual ESVS meeting, we hold a Young Vascular Surgeons Forum, where, with the support of the ESVS, the 8 best papers submitted by vascular surgeons in training are presented. A Newsletter with relevant information on European vascular training issues and articles of academic interest is published regularly (4 issues/year) and sent free of charge to all EAVST members.
The most active EAVST members may benefit from sponsorships and travel grants to attend international meetings in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery. Awards are based on the activity of vascular trainees within the ESVS and EAVST.
We would encourage all of you to also join the list of European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery reviewers. This is unique chance to be involved in selecting the papers for this high-quality journal. Just send your application and a CV to the EJVES Editorial Office (EJVES@elsevier.com).
We hope that European vascular surgical trainees will be encouraged to join EAVST. Membership is free and applicants should be in a training post or within the first two years of independent clinical practice. Membership applications should be sent to the Secretary by e-mail. After the first years with slow progress all the hard work of its Board and members has paid off. The EAVST is a large society (1650 members) with a growing influence, a strong and generally active Executive Committee working with many new ideas and projects. We are also revamping our website which we hope will be operational over the next three weeks. It will contain an educational section, information on grants / exchange programs and other useful features relevant to vascular trainees - please visit our site at www.eavst.org.
Best wishes,
Alexei Svetlikov, MD PhD (asvetlikov@mail.ru), ESVS Junior Members Representative and EAVST General Secretary
