Looking forward to the CIRSE 2006 meeting, Interventional News talks to Professor Roberto Passariello, Congress chairman, about this year's exciting programme. As always, a packed CIRSE programme promises to enhance theoretical knowledge on the main diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and provide the chance to practice specific parts of interventional radiology that are of remarkable clinical importance.

As well as the usual presentations and lectures, attendees can also look forward to interactive cases, a discussion forum, a morbidity and mortality conference, virtual reality hand-on workshop and a special session on robotics in interventional procedures. "Several modifications have been made on the great programme from last year. These new sessions have been introduced to give to the participants a more modern and interactive meeting," said Passariello.

"There will be many highlights in the programme both for novices and experts. For novices there are several basic workshops on different topics as well as two foundation courses on biliary intervention and superficial femoral artery angioplasty," he commented. "For the expert, the programme will cover every type of procedures including advances in vascular imaging, endovenous ablation tumour ablation and clinical practice development."

This year's meeting also sees the continuation of the Foundation Courses, which were introduced for the first time two years ago. "The Foundation Courses are especially for young physicians who are focusing on basic principles and success of the two previous editions, the two session this year will focus on biliary drainage and peripheral intervention," he added.

Other highlights include a mini-symposium on intermittent claudication that will provide complete analysis of this pathology in terms of indication. The medical aspects, therapeutic options and endovascular procedures will be analysed by a team of experts.

There will also be the Hands-on-Workshops, where participants have the possibility to perform procedures directly on models using different radiofrequency generators with a continuous assistance of experts. Moreover, discussion will be performed on how to improve the outcomes and how to reduce complications. A part of the session will be also dedicated to extrahepatic ablation including kidney, bone and lung.

"A terrific amount of work has been made by all the organisation to give participants the most interesting programme not only covering the everyday procedures, but also those procedure at the cutting edges of our specialty," Passariello concluded.
