Sorin, Europe's largest medical technology company specializing in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, announced at the end of November that Janus, its revolutionary drug-eluting stent, has reached €1 million of sales in Europe within its first month since the commercial launch.
"We are very proud of the result achieved so far, which demonstrates the high interest from the medical community and the unique nature of our technology. Janus is the only drug-eluting stent on the market combining the benefits of Carbofilm, Sorin's pyrolytic carbon-based highly biocompatible coating, proven to significantly reduce risk of thrombotic events, with a proprietary drug release system. We are confident Janus penetration will further increase in the next months," said Drago Cerchiari, Sorin's Chief Executive Officer.
This technology places the drug (Tacrolimus, a cytostatic drug also known as FK506 produced by Fujisawa) in reservoirs on the stent's outer surface, ensuring targeted release.
Available clinical evidence will be further substantiated by Jupiter II, the multi-center randomized clinical trial. The company said that six-month clinical results are expected to be submitted for publication by mid-2005.
